What's in a name?

What's in a name?

In 1898, a newly-arrived Chinese immigrant (from Canton, now Guangzhou) opened up Joe Lung Café at what is now Sixth Street and San Jacinto in Downtown Austin. On Fridays, farm families would sell their produce and bring (my great grandfather) money for safekeeping in his trademark "little red box." He lent money to people who couldn't go to the banks, especially minorities. All was done on a handshake, with nothing but "Pay me what you can."

These values - kindness, equity, trust, and maybe a little improvisation - represent the very foundation upon which we are building this store. It's our way to carry forward a legacy of access.
